GROWING UP!

Born and raised in the North Side, Pittsburgh, PA in 1930. Our neighborhood was called Summer Hill and rose up from East Street on a 45 degree cobblestone road called Mt. Pleasant. Not many cars during this era and most everyone walked up and down the steep street and rode the street car on East Street into the city. Us kids didn't walk down the street, we had a path straight down through the trees and walked about 2 miles to school from the bottom of the hill. There was no kindergarten and I entered First grade at age 5. At that time, it seemed that all teachers were older women. The discipline was very strict and punishment was always forthcoming. Missing school was a major thing and unless a kid was sick, it never happened.
